چکیده

We present VLT/FORS2 spectroscopic observations of globular clusters (GCs) in five low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxies: KK211 and KK221, which are both dwarf spheroidal satellites (dSph) of NGC 5128, dSph KK84 located close to the isolated S0 galaxy NGC 3115, and two isolated dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies UGC 3755 and ESO 490-17. Our sample is selected from the Sharina et al. (2005) database of Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 photometry of GC candidates in dwarf galaxies. For objects with accurate radial velocity measurements we confirm 26 as genuine GCs out of the 27 selected candidates from our WFPC2 survey. One candidate appears to be a distant galaxy. Our measurements of the Lick absorption line indices in the spectra of confirmed GCs and the subsequent comparison with SSP model predictions show that all confirmed GCs in dSphs are old, except GC KK211-3-149 (6±2 Gyr), which we consider to be the nucleus of KK211. GCs in UGC 3755 and ESO 490-17 show a large spread in ages ranging from old objects (t > 10 Gyr) to clusters with ages around 1 Gyr. Most of our sample GCs have low metallicities [Z/H] ≤ −1. Two relatively metal-rich clusters with [Z/H] ≈ −0.3 are likely to be associated with NGC 3115. Our sample GCs show in general a complex distribution of α-element enhancement with a mean 〈[α/Fe]〉 = 0.19± 0.04 derived with the χ minimization technique and 0.18±0.12 dex computed with the iterative approach. These values are slightly lower than the mean 〈[α/Fe]〉 = 0.29±0.01 for typical Milky Way GCs. We compare other abundance ratios with those of Local Group GCs and find indications for systematic differences in N and Ca abundance. The specific frequencies, SN , of our sample galaxies are in line with the predictions of a simple mass-loss model for dwarf galaxies and compare well with SN values found for dwarf galaxies in nearby galaxy clusters. Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of Globular Cluster Candidates in Low Surface Brightness Dwarf Galaxies⋆

Fifty-seven nearby low surface brightness dwarf galaxies (−10 ∼ MV ∼ −16) were searched for globular cluster candidates (GCCs) using Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 imaging in V and I . The sample consists of 18 dwarf spheroidal (dSph), 36 irregular (dIrr), and 3 ”transition” type (dIrr/dSph) galaxies with angular sizes less than 3.7 kpc situated at distances 2−6 Mpc in the field and in the nearby...

The Ghosts of Galaxies: Tidal Debris in Clusters

Gravitational interactions in rich clusters can strip material from the outer parts of galaxies or even completely disrupt entire systems, giving rise to large scale, low surface brightness ghostly features stretching across intergalactic space. The nearby Coma and Centaurus clusters both have striking examples of galaxy ghosts, in the form of 100 kpc-long plumes of intergalactic debris. By sea...

The low surface brightness dwarf members of nearby groups of galaxies

The low surface brightness dwarf members of nearby groups of galaxies Abstract We present the photometric and spectroscopic results of a survey done in a wide-field area of nearby groups and poor clusters. The main goals are identifying and characterizing the properties of low-surface-brightness dwarf galaxies and determining the galaxy luminosity function for M V > −13. We surveyed areas (typi...

Dissecting the luminosity function of the Coma cluster of galaxies using CFHT wide field images

We determined the relative spatial density of the Coma cluster galaxies selected by luminosity, and the contribution of the galaxies of each central brightness to the luminosity function (i.e. the luminosity function bi–variate in central brightness). The Coma cluster and control fields were imaged using the CFH12K (42 × 28 arcmin) and UH8K (28 × 28 arcmin) wide–field cameras at the Canada–Fran...

The Dwarf Galaxy Population in Nearby Groups. the Data

We used V and I CCD photometry to search for low-surface brightness dwarf galaxies in the central (< 0.5 h Mpc) region of the loose groups NGC 6868 (Telescopium) and NGC 5846, the compact group HCG 42 and the poor cluster IC 4765. We used the parameters given by the exponential profile fit (central surface brightness, scale length and limiting diameter) to identify 80 low surfacebrightness dwar...
